Our Values: Changes Working Families Need

Paid Sick Days

In this tough economy, it should be clearer than ever to our elected leaders that working families need the basic economic security that having even a few paid sick days provides.

We nearly succeeded in passing a basic labor standard for paid sick days in Connecticut this year to protect public health and working families.

Our paid sick days bill passed in the House -- and came within inches of passing in the Senate. You can see which legislators supported paid sick days and who went against this common seanse measure.

It's Flu Season: Time for Paid Sick Days

Everyone's starting to stock up on cough drops and vitamin C. But there's an important, common-sense public health reform that our legislators can take this year to keep us healthy.

But over 40% of working people in Connecticut don't get a single paid sick days all year. They prepare our food, look after our kids, and care for the sick and elderly. When they come to work sick, their germs become our germs.

And this flu season could be more dangerous than ever because people just can't afford to take a day off without pay.

Tell your legislators: We support paid sick days so everyone in can take the time to care for themselves and their children.

It's flu season. We need sick days!
Paid Sick Days isn't just common sense. It also helps stop the spread of disease. Tell your legislators!

Nobody should have to go to work sick. It's just common sense. Unfortunately, about 40% of working people in the state don't have a single paid sick day all year.

When people have to go to work sick, it's not just a problem for them -- it's a problem for all of us.

That's because the people who are most likely to lack paid sick days are people who work in places where they interact with the public. Food service workers, and retails workers disproportionately lack paid sick days -- even sometimes childcare providers and nurses. Exactly the LAST people we would want coming to work sick.

It hurts businesses too - when people come to work sick, they're not likely to be very productive, but they will probably spread illness to coworkers.

And it even raises the costs of our entire healthcare system. When people can't take a day off to go to the doctor, they're less likely to get the preventive care that keeps people healthy and keeps down the cost of treating long term illness.

Allowing all working people to earn at least a few paid sick days is a common sense idea whose time has come.
