Our Values: Changes Working Families Need

Fair Taxes

Affordable Healthcare
Billionaires for Budget Cuts is a diverse group of insurance company CEOs, bailed-out Wall Street executives and hedge fund managers, united to stop even a pay increase in taxes on the very rich, even if it means slashing healthcare and education.

If you feel like you're paying more than your fair share of taxes, you are probably right.

Working class and middle class people pay a higher percentage of their income to state and local taxes than the wealthy do. And most of the federal tax cuts of the past decade have disproportionately benefited big businesses and the very wealthy.

Businesses that send jobs overseas get tax breaks. Giant corporations can hire lawyers to dodge taxes. But most of us just see growing property tax bills every year.

Of course, property taxes pay for valuable municipal services, from schools to police to garbage pick-up, and nobody wants to cut those vital services.

But it's time for working and middle class families to get tax breaks for once, and move more of the tax burden back to the very wealthy and to huge corporations, where it used to be.

Make Work Pay

One way to make our tax system a little more fair is by establishing an Earned Income Tax Credit on the state income tax. The EITC is a tax credit that working class families can get to reduce their tax burden. The Federal EITC has been one of the most effective anti-poverty programs in our nation's history, and a state EITC would magnify its effect.
