Nearly one half of the private sector workforce in the nation does not receive a single guaranteed paid sick day all year. Among low wage and service sector workers, that figure rises to as high as 80%. Working Families believes that no one should be forced to go to work sick, to meet basic economic necessities, and risk infecting their co-workers or the public.
Working Families supports Senate Bill 217, the Healthy Families, Healthy Workplaces Act, which would guarantee working people in the state a modest amount of paid sick time.
This idea follows in the great tradition of all laws that raise the minimum standards for working people: minimum wages, 8 hour work day, living wages, safety standards, and now mandatory sick time.
